ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: In order to transport heavy-load railway wagons, in particular mixer-type hot-metal wagons, on inland- waterway vessels, it is proposed that the vessels be fitted with a railway track running from bow to stern above the loaded waterline. Used for loading and unloading is a lock chamber located at the loading station or the unloading station on a navigable waterway. These lock chambers are equipped with devices for raising and lowering the water level and have a step over which the vessel can be traversed with the lock chamber flooded and on the floor of which the vessel can lie when the water level is lowered, the track on the vessel joining up with a land-based access line so that wagons can be moved by rail on to or down into the vessel. On completion of loading or unloading, the lock chamber is flooded again so that the vessel can be traversed off the step and, by lowering the water level, brought to the level of the water in the waterway and permitted to leave th elock chamber.
