The substrates are movable with respect to each other to provide a plurality of configurations. The substrates and the electrical elements cooperate to provide electrical properties therebetween which may be sensed to determine substrates separation and provide the system with information to cause its mode of operation to correspond with the page opened. In several embodiments, the substrates are arranged in pageable books (40), tablets (210), sheet arrays (371), and exchange booklets (440).
