A process for releasing acidic organic compounds from aqueous solutions of their salts by carbon dioxide in the presence of an essentially water-insoluble organic solvent, comprises re-extracting the organic phase with carbon dioxide-containing water. In the process according to the invention, the acidic compounds are completely released from the corresponding salts, i.e. the organic solution is free of salts.
