A method of reducing leakage from a shaft connection for a pump sealed by compressible packing and a pump fitting. The pump fitting has a tubular housing which is attached where a shaft extends from a pump housing. Compressible packing is positioned within an interior bore at a second end of the tubular housing. A tubular piston is positioned within the interior bore at the second end of the tubular housing overlying the shaft with a first end of the tubular piston engaging the compressible packing. An end cap is secured on the second end of the tubular housing. As the end cap is tightened it exerts a force upon a second end of the tubular piston thereby causing the first end of the tubular piston to exert a compressive force upon the compressive packing.
