An improved retaining wall system made of a lower row of blocks and an upper row of blocks stacked on the top of the lower row of blocks. Each block has a top surface with an axially extending and upstanding projection, a bottom surface with an axially extending recess shaped and sized to receive a corresponding projection from another block located below. The retaining wall further has an anchoring matrix for tying back the retaining wall. The improvement lies in that the anchoring matrix is shaped as a rigid ladder. Furthermore, at least some of the blocks of the lower row of the retaining wall include a groove on their top surface. The groove is sized and shaped to receive one of the ends of the ladder.
