The sound reproduction in a noisy environment may be improved by detecting the noise level and deriving a control signal from said noise level, by means of which control signal the gain and frequency response of the reproduction amplifier can be controlled. The control vol- tage controls an electronic potentiometer, which controls from a signal of high reproduction quality towards a sig- nal which has been subjected to contrast compression and which exhibits a roll-off towards the bass frequencies.
