Amphiphilic, polyhedron-shaped p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene building blocks, which have been shown previously to assemble into bilayers in an antiparallel fashion, assemble in a parallel alignment into spherical and helical tubular structures on the addition of pyridine N-oxide and lanthanide ions. The addition of greater amounts of pyridine N-oxide changed the curvature of the assembling surface and led to the formation of extended tubules. The inventive compositions and methods are useful for drug delivery and construction of nano- devices.

L'invention concerne des éléments structuraux p-sulfonatocalix[4]arène amphiphiles de forme polyédrique, dont on a montré antérieurement qu'ils s'assemblaient en bicouches de manière antiparallèle, qui peuvent s'assembler dans un alignement parallèle en structures tubulaires sphériques et hélicoïdales, suite à l'adjonction de N-oxyde de pyridine et d'ions lanthanide. L'adjonction de quantités accrues de N-oxyde de pyridine modifie la courbure de la surface d'assemblage et conduit à la formation de tubules allongés. Les compositions et les procédés décrits sont utiles pour la délivrance de médicaments et la réalisation de structures à l'échelle nanométrique.
