-47- PROCESS FOR MAKING A SILICON CARBIDE COMPOSITION ABSTRACT An improved process for preparing a composite material containing silicon carbide whiskers is disclosed. In the first step of this process, a slurry-containing aluminum, amorphous carbon, silica, a source of carbon monoxide, source of hydrogen fluoride, and non-aqueous liquid is provided. Thereafter, the slurry is pelletized. The pellets are then dried, preheated, and ignited to form the silicon carbide composite material.
