A method of insulating a substrate from repeated thermal transients and/or thermal impulses applied thereto by proximately absorbing and storing the thermal transients and/or thermal impulses for subsequent removal by radiation. According to the method, a coating (10) is placed in energy absorbing contacting relation with the substrate. The coating (10) includes a base material (20) and a plurality of microcapsules (30) dispersed within the base material (20). The microcapsules (30) may be dispersed throughout the base material (10) and may be submerged therein so that they are substantially space apart from one another. The microcapsules (30) contain a thermal energy absorbing material (40), for example, a phase change material such as a paraffinic hydrocarbons or alternatively, plastic crystals. Articles of manufacture may be produced according to the present invention which employ the above described coating.

L'invention concerne un procédé d'isolation d'un substrat à partir de transitoires thermiques répétés et/ou d'impulsions thermiques appliquées par absorption approximative et par stockage des transitoires thermiques et/ou des impulsions thermiques dans un dessein d'élimination par rayonnement. Selon ce procédé, un revêtement (10) est placé dans un rapport de contact d'absorption d'énergie avec le substrat. Le revêtement (10) comprend un matériau de base (20) et une pluralité de microcapsules (30) dispersées dans le matériau de base (20). Les microcapsules (30) peuvent être dispersées dans le matériau de base (10) et y être submergées de manière à être sensiblement espacées les unes des autres. Les microcapsules (30) renferment un matériau (40) d'absorption d'énergie thermique tel qu'un matériau à changement de phase, notamment un hydrocarbure paraffinique ou des cristaux plastiques. On peut produire des articles selon l'invention au moyen du revêtement précité.
