A pretensioner (10) for a seat belt (13) utilizes a relatively inexpensive gas-producing cartridge (12) that is easily replaced after activation so as to condition the pretensioner for subsequent use. The cartidge is similar to a shotgun shell and is chambered in a breech block (22). The cartidge contains a gas-producing pyrotechnic (32) and a piston (36). Upon ignition, gas produced by the pyrotechnic effects advancement of the piston (36) which, through an associated mechanism, takes up slack in the seat belt (13).

L'invention concerne un prétensionneur (10) de ceinture de sécurité (13) dans lequel on utilise une cartouche (12) produisant du gaz relativement bon marché et facile à remplacer après activation de manière à préparer le prétensionneur à une nouvelle utilisation. Cette cartouche qui est similaire à une cartouche de fusil est logée dans une culasse (22). Ladite cartouche contient une matière pyrotechnique (32) produisant un gaz et un piston (36). Lors de la mise à feu, le gaz produit par la matière pyrotechnique fait avancer le piston (36) lequel supprime le mou au niveau de la ceinture (13) par l'intermédiaire d'un mécanisme associé.
