A seedling transplant apparatus includes a seedling tray which is supplied to the apparatus on a conveyor system. The seedling tray can be split into individual rows of seedling cells. The individual rows are then movedby a guide into a plurality of tracks spaced at a greater width than the original spacing of the rows with that width equal to the dimensions of the receptacle cells into which the seedlings are to be transplanted. The tracks are aligned with the rows of the receptacle cells. An array of pusher pins underneath the guide tracks pushes the root ball of the seedling from the cell into the jaws ofan array of lifting elements. The lifting elements in the array are moved longitudinally of the tracks with the spacing longitudinally therebetween increased to match the spacing of the receptacle array into which the seedlings are transplanted. The apparatus further includes an array of dibbler rods which engage into the receptacle cells. The gripper jaws also effect the tamping action around the root ball after insertion of the root ball into the receptacle cell.
