A viewing device (19) for use by an observer (63) to ascertain the authenticity of an instrument of value (16) having an image (17) formed from an optically variable device (18). The viewing device (19) includes a flame structure (23) which permits viewing of the image (17) in a fixed spatial orientation and a reflector (61) carried by the frame structure (23) for permitting the observer (63) to see simultaneously the image (17) in first and second colors without movement of the observer (63), the viewing device (19) or the image (17).
