2095342 9207993 PCTABS00013 In a method and apparatus for removing ink from waste paper material, the material is pulped in a pulping vessel (1) to form a slushed fibrous stock and ink particles are dispersed therefrom. In one embodiment, the pulping and ink dispersal and also removal of the dispersed ink particles are carried out in the same pulping vessel. A mixture of the waste paper material and water is placed in the pulping vessel (1), such as a hydropulper, and stirred or agitated by a rotor (2) to form the slushed fibrous stock (3). During the pulping process, ink particles are dispersed within the stock (3) and may be removed from the stock either by vacuum means (10, 11) or by passing through the walls of a perforated container (4). Lines (8, 9) introduce streams of air and water/air into the vessel (1) to assist the speed of ink removal. In another example, after the pulping and ink dispersal in the pulping vessel (1), the stock is passed to a storage vessel (22), such as a storage chest, for removal of the ink particles by, for example, vacuum means (10, 11) or the perforated container (4).
