The instant invention discloses a process for the preparation of compounds of formula I (see formula I), wherein the general symbols are as defined in claim 1, which process comprises hydrolyzing a compound of formula V (see formula V), wherein the general symbols are as defined in claim 1, in an aqueous solvent in the pre-sence of an acid. The compounds of the formula V are new and useful as stabilizers for protecting organic materials, in particular polymers and lubricants, against oxidative, thermal or light-induced degradation.
