A method of entraining or mixing air into water is described which comprise the steps of spinning a circular disc immersed in water to set up a radial flow of water off the disc; locating a cylindrical shroud close to and concentric with the disc to induce an axial water flow off the shroud to intersect with the radial flow off the disc; and forming an annular air nozzle between the disc and shroud at the flow intersection whereby a water dimple containing air is formed which upon cyclic collapse traps air in the form of bubbles which are swept away by the combined flows. Other fluids besides water and air are also contemplated. An aerator employing this method to aerate waste water is also described.
