A method of use of a composition including either or both isomers of hydrogenated methylbenzotriazole, namely, 5-Methyl-1H-Benzotriazole or 4- Methyl-1H-Benzotriazole which have been at least about 50 % hydrogenated, to form corrosion inhibiting films on metal surfaces in an aqueous environment. The hydrogenated methylbenzotriazole compositions provide both improved passivation and improved film persistence when charged to aqueous industrial systems either on a continuous or on an intermittent basis. Continuous dosing is generally kept at a constant 0.5, typically 1-2 ppm in the aqueous system to be treated; intermittent doses are generally 10-20 ppm once every week or two or more. Beyond the improved characteristics described above, films formed from the inventive composition also reduce spiking in corrosion rates immediately following halogen addition; foster faster return to pre- halogenation corrosion rates post-halogenation; and reduce the rate of conversion of phosphonate to orthophosphate, which reduces scale potential. For these reasons, the present compositions are either continuously or intermittently fed and effective to inhibit corrosion or copper and copper alloy surfaces subjected to alkaline, neutral or slightly acidic aqueous systems.

Technique qui permet d'utiliser une composition renfermant un seul isomère ou les deux isomères du méthylbenzotriazole hydrogéné, c'est-à-dire le 5-méthyl-1H-benzotriazole ou le 4-méthyl-1H-benzotriazole, hydrogénés à au moins 50 % environ, pour former des couches anticorrosion sur des surfaces métalliques dans un environnement aqueux. Les compositions de méthylbenzotriazole hydrogéné assurent une meilleure passivation et une meilleure persistance des couches quand elles sont appliquées sur des systèmes industriels aqueux sur une base soit continue, soit intermittente. Le dosage en continu est généralement maintenu à une constante > 0,5, typiquement égale à 1-2 ppm, dans le système aqueux à traiter; les doses intermittentes sont généralement comprises entre 10 et 20 ppm une fois par semaine ou toutes les deux semaines, ou davantage. Outre les caractéristiques améliorées décrites ci-dessus, les couches formées par la composition de l'invention diminuent le pic de la vitesse de corrosion qui fait suite à l'ajout d'un halogène; elles favorisent, après l'halogénation, un retour rapide aux vitesses de corrosion antérieures à l'halogénation; et elles diminuent la vitesse de conversion des phosphonates en orthophosphates, ce qui atténue le risque d'écaillage. Pour ces raisons, ces compositions appliquées en continu ou par intermittences sont efficaces pour inhiber la corrosion des surfaces de cuivre et d'alliages de cuivre soumises à des systèmes alcalins, neutres ou légèrement acides.
