- 9 - ABSTRACT EMISSION CONTROL A method is described for reducing the light-off time of a catalytic converter 10, which comprises exposing the matrix 18 of the converter 10 to an alternating magnetic field or to electromagnetic radiation having such a frequency that the wash coat on the matrix 18 and the particles of catalyst dispersed in the wash coat are heated to the light-off temperature without a corresponding increase in the temperature of the entire matrix. In the preferred embodiment, the matrix is constructed in two or more parts and only one part 18 is heated by microwave radiation from a source 26 connected to the converter 10.
