An integrated impact energy management system (10) is provided for managing a wide range of impact energies exerted upon impact of a vehicle (23) with an object. The system includes a cover structure (30) adapted for attachment to a vehicle (23), the cover structure (30) being designed to deform elastically when impact energy is exerted thereon, and having an inner surface (38) with a preformed detent (42). The system also includes a folding coupler mechanism (60) including a shank (44) having a proximate end (62) adapted to attach to the vehicle, and a longitudinal axis that extends from the proximate end (62) to a distal end (64) in a direction substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the vehicle (23). The shank has an energy absorption element (66) for absorbing energy caused by compressive forces exerted along the longitudinal axis of the shank (44). The folding coupler mechanism also includes a coupling head (48) pivotally attached to the distal end (64) of the shank (44) for pivoting between an extended position and a stowed position. The distal end (64) of the shank (44) moves into the preformed detent (42) in the cover structure (30) after consumption of the energy absorbing capacity of the cover structure (30) when the coupling head (48) is in the stowed position.
L'invention concerne un système de gestion d'énergie d'impact intégré destiné à gérer une large gamme d'énergie d'impact exercée lors de l'impact d'un véhicule (23) avec un objet. Le système comprend une structure de protection (30) conçue de manière à être fixée à un véhicule (23). Cette structure (30) a été conçue afin de se déformer élastiquement lorsqu'une énergie d'impact y est exercée, et comporte une surface interne (38) à déformation convexe préformée (42). Le système comprend également un arceau de couplage se repliant (60) qui comporte une tige (44) à extrémité proximale (62) destinée à la fixation au véhicule, et un axe longitudinal qui s'étend à partir de l'extrémité proximale (62) jusqu'à une extrémité distale (64) dans une direction sensiblement parallèle à l'axe longitudinal du véhicule (23). La tige comporte un élément d'absorption d'énergie (66) destiné à absorber l'énergie entraînée par des forces de compression exercées le long de l'axe longitudinal de la tige (44). L'arceau de couplage se pliant comprend également une tête de couplage (48) fixée pivotante à l'extrémité distale (64) de la tige (44) afin de pivoter entre une position pliée et une position dépliée. L'extrémité distale (64) de la tige (44) se déplace dans la déformation convexe préformée (42) de la structure de protection (30) après consommation de la capacité d'absorption d'énergie de la structure de protection (30) lorsque la tête de couplage (48) est en position pliée.
