22 ABSTRACT Method and Apparatus for generating Cephalometric Images In the generation of a cephalometric images, for example in orthodontic analysis, a probe 13 linked to a computer 1 is used to determine directly the positions of anatomical points of the head 12 of a subject which is held in place by a restrainer 6. The position of the tip of the probe is determined using sonic transmitters 14 and receives 4. The points located by the probe are used to determine the positions of anatomical landmarks for cephalometric tracings including, by means of extrapolation, some that are inaccessible to the probe. These are then used to produce a cephalometric tracing Which can be superimposed on a video image of the subject's head. The use of x-rays or invasive techniques is avoided.
