With a typical gate latch, a bolt or bar rests passively in a notched receptacle, which is attached to the gate post, and is lifted out of the receptacle by a vertical motion. In this invention, the bar is actively held tight in the receptacle so that it cannot be jiggled open. Opening the latch requires the exertion of a rotational motion on the handle, which is attached to the bar. The bar pivots on a bolt that is affixed through the bar's centrepoint. A cylindrical housing, notched to fit over the bar, contains a spring, which displaces the bar into the receptacle automatically. A latch of this nature will lock securely by itself when the gate is pushed shut, requiring no mechanical action, such as sliding a bolt into place, by the operator. A safety bar, which protrudes from the bottom edge of the latch, ensures that an animal cannot lift the latch. The option of the new latch will give the owner increased security over their valuebles.
