A filter medium comprises a mass of elongate, differently orientated, shape-- sustaining elongate elements comprising a sponge material, the different orientation of the elements causing these to form a self supporting open network which provides substantial interstitial space between the elements, this space preferably being larger than the total volume of the elements themselves. The sponge material may be cellulose or PVA. The elements may be tubular, or they may have a reinforcing core to retain their shape. The reinforcing core may be of stiff synthetic plastic material. Filtration apparatus comprises such a mass of filter medium in a tank with ports for admitting air for filtering and exhausting filtered air. The tank may be separated into several sections by perforated screens supporting respective layers of filter medium.
