The invention provides a method for selecting input video signals in a video conference for transmission. The method bases its selection decision on the momentary voice ac-tivity of the participants, but does so while observing con-straints aimed at: .cndot. improving stability of the image seen by each participant; .cndot. decreasing flickering of the image; .cndot. choos-ing comfortable and helpful swapping times between different image configurations; and .cndot. reflecting the importance which is attributed to persons having a higher past average activity in a natural conference. In one embodiment of the invention, the set of constraints includes an override, by which one or more par-ticipants can be selected irrespectively of the selection decision. In accordance with a second aspect of the invention, there is provided video selector hardware comprising units to perform the steps of the method.

Cette invention se rapporte à un procédé destiné à sélectionner des signaux vidéo d'entrée dans une vidéoconférence pour une transmission. Le procédé base sa décision de sélection sur l'activité vocale momentanée des participants, mais il le fait tout en observant des contraintes destinées à : améliorer la stabilité de l'image que voit chaque participant ; réduire le scintillement de l'image ; choisir des temps de permutation agréables et utiles entre différentes configurations d'image ; et refléter l'importance qui est attribuée aux personnes qui présentent une activité moyenne passée plus élevée dans une conférence normale. Dans un mode de réalisation de l'invention, l'ensemble des contraintes comprend une priorité grâce à laquelle un ou plusieurs participants peuvent être sélectionnés indépendamment de la décision de sélection. Selon un deuxième aspect de l'invention, on fournit un matériel de sélectionneur vidéo qui comprend des unités destinées à exécuter les étapes du procédé.
