A virtual private network (31) includes an Internet protocol (IP) network (47) and a public switched telephone net- work (PSTN) (37). An enterprise gateway (55) is operably connected to the IP network (47). The enterprise gateway (61) is operably connected to a switch (33) of the PSTN (37) through a direct access line (DAL). The set-up signaling for virtual private network (31) calls and the calls themselves are transported across the Internet protocol network (47) and the public switched telephone network (37) through the direct access line.
