Starting point: The capacity of a switching network could be increased by increasing the clock rate, but the necessary changes in all interfaces can only be made on a very long-term basis. Technical problem: temporary solution which permits gradual replacement or expansion with new interfaces. Basic idea: use of switching elements whose inputs and outputs are switchable separately between two bit rates. Solution: frame structure based on the lowest bit rate. Within such a frame, even signals with the highest bit rate can be buffered and converted in time. 4 Mb/s and 32 Mb/s are planned. Advantage: combination of several channels into higher-capacity connections (N x 64 Kb/s) readily possible. Higher bit rate only in case of real need. Consequently, reduction of power dissipation and spurious radiation.
