2142855 9404296 PCTABS00030 A melt overflow apparatus for controlling various elements in response to incremental changes in parameters which affect the linear density of a continuous metal fiber mat (26) or metal strip being produced. The width of fibers being cast against a rotating, casting wheel (10) is measured by an infrared detector (21). A similar infrared detector measures the (21) width of a metal strip being formed. A means (28) is included for measuring the weight of a portion of the strip or fiber mat (26). The weight and width values are relayed to a control means (30) which then controls various elements used in producing the metal product. These devices include electric motors (12, 24) driving both the casting wheel (10) and a conveying means (20) for transporting the fiber mat (26) or strip. A means (19) for driving a ceramic plunging body (18) into a pool of molten metal (16) to overflow onto the casting wheel (10) can also be controlled.
