A selective process for the preparation of N-alkyl-beta aminopropionic acids (I): RNHC2H4COOH and N-alkyl-beta-iminodipropionic acids (II): RNH(C2H4COOH)2 wherein R is a C8 to C24 hydrocarbon, said process comprising reacting an alpha, beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid in aqueous media with the corresponding primary amine of the formula R1NH2 wherein R1 is a fatty group having 8 to 24 carbon atoms, in the presence of an organic or inorganic base having a pKb of 1 15, whereby the pH of the reaction is maintained in a range of from about 3.5 to about 5.

Un procédé sélectif de préparation d'acides N-alkyl-béta aminopropioniques (I): RNHC¿2?H¿4?COOH et d'acides N-alkyl-béta-iminodipropioniques (II): RNH(C¿2?H¿4?COOH)¿2?, dans lesquels R représente un hydrocarbure C¿8? à C¿24?, consiste à faire réagir un acide alpha-béta-insaturé carboxylique dans un milieu aqueux avec l'amine primaire correspondante de la formule R¿1?NH¿2? dans laquelle R¿1? représente un groupe gras ayant 8 à 24 atomes de carbone, en la présence d'une base organique ou inorganique ayant un pKb de ?1 ?15, de manière que le pH de la réaction soit maintenu dans une gamme allant d'environ 3,5 à 5.
