A steerable stylet and manipulative handle assembly (1) for guiding a lead or a catheter to a desired location in a patient. The steerable stylet comprises an outer, elongated tubular member (10) of a length sufficient to extend through the length of the lead or catheter from its proximal opening to the distal end (16) thereof, a traction element or pull wire (12) extending generally through the length of the tubular member (10) and within its lumen except for a span (15) in the distal portion (16) thereof, and a manipulative handle (28) coupled to the proximal ends (14) of the tubular member (10) and wire (12). Traction applied with one hand to the pull wire (12) via the handle (28) causes the distal portion (16) of the tubular member (10) to bend. Distal portion (16) of the tubular member (10) is provided with openings (18, 20) to allow the wire (12) to exit and re-enter the lumen and facilitate bending of the tubular member (10). Distal portion (16) of the tubular member (10) which bends is preferably deformed, such as cut out or flattened or indented, to avoid kinking. A retainer (82) surrounds the area proximate the openings and protects the exposed pull wire (12).

La traction appliquée avec une main sur le fil de traction (12) par l'intermédiaire de la poignée (28) provoque la flexion de la partie distale (16) de l'élément tubulaire (10). Cette partie (16) est pourvue d'ouvertures (18, 20) qui permettent au fil (12) de sortir et d'entrer de nouveau dans le passage et qui facilitent la flexion de l'élément tubulaire (10). La partie distale (16) de ce dernier qui fléchit est de préférence déformée comme une découpure, ou bien aplatie ou entaillée, afin d'éviter tout vrillage. Un élément de retenue (82) entoure la zone à proximité des ouvertures et protège le fil de traction exposé (12).
