A warming system is provided for convectively warming a patient during a progressive medical procedure, such as cardiac surgery. The system includes one or more inflatable thermal blankets that are adjustably configurable to cover one or both of a patient's legs. Each thermal blanked includes an inflatable covering formed from an upper sheet and a base sheet attached at a plurality of locations. The base sheet includes a plurality of apertures that direct an inflating medium from the inflatable covering toward the patient. A portion of each thermal blanket is initially furled us-ing a retaining device that prevents an inflating medium from inflating the furled portion. The non-furled portion of each thermal blanket is allowed to inflate and cover a patient. Prior to inflation, the furled portion of each thermal blanket defines a thermal blanket edge which demarcates an access area for a surgical procedure. When the re- taining strip is removed, the furled portion is unfurled by action of the inflating medium and self erects into a continuation of the previously inflated non-furled portion of the thermal blanket to cover the surgical access site. A surgical drape may be placed over the tops of the thermal blankets in order to properly position each blanket on the patient, to maintain the temperature controlled medium proximate to the patient, and to perform the usual barrier functions of a drape. In the operation, a heater/blower that includes a compressor and a heater supplies heated air, under pressure, to an inlet opening in the one or more inflatable thermal blankets. The heated, pressurized air is distributed throughout each inflatable blanket, and flows to the patient through the apertures in the blanket's base sheet.

Ledit système comporte une ou plusieurs couvertures thermiques gonflables qui peuvent être configurées de manière réglable de façon à couvrir une ou les deux jambes d'un patient. Chaque couverture thermique comporte une enveloppe gonflable formée d'une feuille supérieure et d'une feuille de base attachées en une pluralité de sites. La feuille de base comporte une pluralité d'ouvertures qui dirigent un fluide de gonflage de l'enveloppe gonflable vers le patient. Une partie de chaque couverture thermique est initialement enroulée à l'aide d'un dispositif de retenue qui empêche le fluide de gonflage de gonfler la partie enroulée. La partie non enroulée de chaque couverture thermique peut être gonflée et couvrir un patient. Avant le gonflage, la partie enroulée de chaque couverture thermique définit un bord de couverture thermique qui délimite une zone d'accès pour l'intervention chirurgicale. Lorsque la bande de retenue est enlevée, la partie enroulée est déroulée sous l'effet du fluide de gonflage et se place d'elle-même dans la continuation de la partie non enroulée antérieurement gonflée de la couverture thermique pour couvrir le site d'accès chirurgical. Un champ opératoire peut être placé sur les couvertures thermiques de manière à placer correctement chaque couverture sur le patient, à maintenir le fluide à température régulée à proximité du patient et à accomplir les fonctions de barrière habituelles pour un champ opératoire. Pendant l'intervention, un dispositif de chauffe/souffleur qui comporte un compresseur et un organe de chauffe fournit de l'air chauffé, sous pression, à un orifice d'entrée des couvertures thermiques gonflables. L'air chaud sous pression est réparti dans chaque couverture gonflable et s'écoule vers le patient par les ouvertures ménagées dans la feuille de base de la couverture.
