A method and apparatus is described for detecting and recognizing an object within a generated image regardless of the aspect view angle of the object within the image. An object may be recognized by comparing descriptor values determined for the detected object with descriptor values and/or value ranges stored in an information base for different aspect view angles of a plurality of objects. A novel desurfacing approach may be use to remove image surface distortions unrelated to objects within the image. A novel graphical user interface may be used to improve user interaction and control of the object recognition process. The method and apparatus described may be used to detect objects within images generated by a wide variety of imaging systems. For example, concealed explosive devices may be detected by configuring the apparatus to recognize views of a conventional blasting cap's dense explosive filler within x-~ray generated images.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de détecter et de reconnaître un objet dans une image produite, indépendamment de l'angle sous lequel l'objet est présenté dans l'image. Ce procédé permet de reconnaître l'objet par comparaison de valeurs de descripteurs déterminées pour l'objet détecté, les valeurs et/ou plages de valeurs des descripteurs étant mémorisées dans une base de données pour différents angles de vue d'une pluralité d'objets. Un nouveau procédé de désurfaçage permet en outre d'éliminer les distorsions de la surface de l'image qui ne sont pas liées aux objets contenus dans l'image. Une nouvelle interface graphique permet d'améliorer l'interaction utilisateur/commande du processus de reconnaissance d'objet. Le procédé et l'appareil décrits peuvent être utilisés pour la détection d'images générées par un large éventail de systèmes d'imagerie. L'appareil peut par exemple être configuré pour reconnaître différentes vues de la charge explosive dense d'un détonateur dans des images obtenues par rayons X, afin de permettre la détection d'engins explosifs dissimulés.
