The present invention provides a fully automated and secure bill payment system which is extremely simple for clients to operate. A bill payment service web site is established which interconnects via the Internet to a plurality of financial institutions, billing parties and clients. The client, using a personal computer or similar device connected to the Internet, can enter the bill payment service web site and request to view an electronic bill presented by any one of a plurality of billing parties. The bill payment service server stores billing party connection information including web address information and client account numbers specific to each billing party and transmits billing party connection information to the client. This permits the client to enter the billing party's web site and view a bill image. The bill image is part of a HTML form which contains hidden identifying information of the biller and the web site address of the bill payment service server. To facilitate payment, the client selects a bill payment icon presented graphically in conjunction with the bill image. This action initiates a sequence of events, including the forwarding of the HTML form to the bill payment service web site, a confirmation message being sent to the client, confirmation by the client, and the debiting and crediting of client and biller accounts respectively.
