A modified dispersant is prepared by the reaction of an acylated amine dispersant containing at least one reactive nitrogen atom, prepared by the reaction of an amine with a hydrocarbyl-substituted acylating agent; and an amount of maleic anhydride or an equivalent thereof sufficient to react with at least a portion of the nitrogen atoms in said acylated amine dispersant. Preferably the reaction with maleic anhydride or its equivalent is conducted simultaneously with the reaction of the amine and the hydrocarbyl acylating agent to form the acylated amine dispersant.

Dispersant modifié préparé par réaction d'un dispersant à base d'amine acylée, contenant au moins un atome d'azote réactif, préparé par réaction d'une amine avec un agent d'acylation à substitution hydrocarbyle, et d'une quantité d'anhydride de l'acide maléique, ou d'un équivalent de ladite substance, suffisante pour réagir avec au moins une partie des atomes d'azote présents dans ledit dispersant à base d'amine acylée. De préférence, la réaction avec l'anhydride de l'acide maléique ou son équivalent est conduite simultanément à la réaction de l'amine et de l'agent d'acylation à substitution hydrocarbyle pour former ledit dispersant à base d'amine acylée.
