The invention relates to a method for in vitro detection and/or differentiation and/or observation of the progression of pathophysiological states (e.g. SIRS or SEPSIS) by way of nucleic acid samples, determination of gene activities by way of a plurality of polynucleotides, determination of gene activity of at least one internal reference gene and formation of an index value from the individually determined, normalized gene activities of a multi-gene biomarker which indicates the pathophysiological state.
