A mass spectrometer system has an elongated rod set having an entrance end, an exit end, a plurality of rods and a central longitudinal axis. The mass spectrometer system is operable to perform the following steps: a) admitting a first plurality of groups of ions into the entrance end of the rod set; b) producing a field between the plurality of rods to confine the first plurality of groups of ions in the rod set; c) selecting a first mass/charge range for a first group of ions in the first plurality of groups of ions; d) providing a first radial excitement field to radially displace the first group of ions within the first mass/charge range from the central longitudinal axis, and concurrently retaining a second group of ions closer to the central longitudinal axis than the first group of ions, the second group of ions being within a second mass/charge range disjoint from the first mass/charge range; and then e) providing a first axial force acting on the first group of ions by providing an axial acceleration field. The first axial force is not provided during step d).
La présente invention concerne un spectromètre de masse pourvu d'un ensemble de tiges allongées présentant une extrémité d'entrée, une extrémité de sortie, plusieurs tiges et un axe longitudinal central. Le spectromètre de masse permet d'exécuter les étapes qui consistent: a) à introduire un premier ensemble de groupes d'ions dans l'extrémité d'entrée de l'ensemble de tiges; b) à produire un champ entre les multiples tiges de manière à confiner le premier ensemble de groupes d'ions dans l'ensemble de tiges; c) à sélectionner une première plage de masse/charge pour un premier groupe d'ions parmi les multiples groupes d'ions; d) à fournir un premier champ d'excitation radial afin de déplacer radialement le premier groupe d'ions à l'intérieur de la plage de masse/charge depuis l'axe longitudinal central et, dans un même temps, retenir un second groupe d'ions plus près de l'axe longitudinal central que le premier groupe d'ions, le second groupe d'ions étant contenu dans une seconde plage de masse/charge éloignée de la première plage de masse/charge; puis e) à appliquer une première force axiale sur le premier groupes d'ions par création d'un champ d'accélération axial. La première force axiale n'est pas appliquée durant l'étape d).
