Disclosed is a method for use of a water stable composition containing water and a reaction product in water of an organosilane, such as a compound of the formula: R n SiX 4-n (in which n is an integer of 0 to 3, R is a non-hydrolyzable organic group, and X is a hydrolyzable group), with a polyol having at least three hydroxyl groups separated by at least three intervening atoms. The method may be used for antimicrobially treating food articles, antimicrobially coating fluid containers and latex medical articles, etc.
