ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A special purpose battery-operated radio receiver to operate in conjunction with earphones for limited range reception. The receiver comprises a housing with audio level adjustment and band selection dials mounted on the housing. A tuner mounted within the housing is associated with the band selection dial. The tuner is pre-set to select any one of a predetermined number of radio frequency bands. An open, battery-receiving pocket is provided within a side of the housing, with the pocket having sides circumscribing a base. Battery contact means are electrically associated with the tuner and positioned on a side of the battery- receiving pocket. An audio contact means for earphones is electrically associated with the tuner and positioned in the battery pocket. The battery pocket and audio contact means provided within it makes it possible to provide a member of the public, such as a bus passenger or a spectator at an athletic or other event with a limited power battery and earphone combination for a nominal charge, which battery and earphones can be returned or discarded, as desired, at the end of the passenger's trip or spectator's athletic or other event.
