A new system for welding sections of pipe (10, 12) together to form a long continuous pipeline. A welding bug (16) is mounted on a guide track (14) which goes around the circumference of the pipe. The welding bug is provided with a wire feeder, a motor (24) to drive the wire feeder, and driving motor (l8) for driving the bug around the track. One may vary the speed of the bug and the wire feeder while the bug is continuously driven around the track. The welding head on the welding bug is powered by a surface-tension-transfer power source (31 ). The initial or root pass is made external of the pipe.

Cette invention concerne un nouveau procédé permettant de souder des sections de tuyaux (10, 12) et de former ainsi un pipeline long et continu. Un curseur de soudage (16) est monté sur une voie de guidage (14) qui s'étend sur toute la circonférence du tuyau. Le curseur de soudage comprend un dispositif d'alimentation en fil, un moteur (24) entraînant ce dispositif d'alimentation, ainsi qu'un moteur (18) permettant d'entraîner ledit curseur tout au long de la voie. Il est possible de modifier la vitesse du curseur ainsi que celle du dispositif d'alimentation en fil pendant que ledit curseur se déplace le long de la voie. La tête de soudage du curseur est alimentée par une source d'alimentation électrique à transfert de tension superficielle (31). La passe initiale ou d'amorçage se fait à l'extérieur du tuyau.
