Substituted quinolinecarboxylic acid useful in the treatment of arthritis by inhibiting the progressive joint deterioration characteristic of arthritic disease and for inducing immunosuppression are disclosed. Methods of synthesis and use of the novel compounds are also disclosed. The compounds of the invention have the general formula Image wherein R1 is an aromatic ring-based moiety; R2 is optionally substituted amino; R3 is a carbonyl-containing group; and R4 to R7 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C1-C6 alkyl, trifluoromethyl and -0- alkyl (C1-C3) with the proviso that at least two of R4 to R7 are hydrogen.
