Hepatic-directed compounds, reagents useful in making such compounds and methods and compositions are discussed. The hepatic-directed compounds are comprised of at least three hexose residues, preferably galactose residues, and of a functional moiety capable of reacting with a binding moiety, a targeting moiety, or an active agent. Hepatic-directed compounds are processed by metabolic mechanisms, which generally differ in degree or in kind from metabolic mechanisms encountered by compounds which are not so directed. The hepatic-directed compounds are used to deliver moieties and agents to the liver and to improve targeting ratio.
