The inventive idea is that paper can be used for disposable cup lids if a different method of mounting on the cup and sealing principles are employed. Contrary to the typical thermoformed plastic lids, which work by way of a clamping groove around the rim of the cup, our paper based lid follows the inside shape of the cup and goes against the inner wall of the cup. It is using wall-to-wall pressure between the inner upper surface of the cup and the outer surface of the lid. This fundamentally different approach to form and function of hot drink disposable lids leverages the inherent material properties of paper in order to create a consistent disposable material base (same for cup and lid), without compromising the fluid-tight sealing effect of thermoformed plastic disposable lids.
