A coating composition useful for forming a semipermeable membrane is provided as well as a method of forming such a membrane. The coating composition comprises a mixture of: (i) polymer that is cellulose acetate butyrate, cellulose acetate propionate, polymethylmethacrylate, a mixture of any of the foregoing, or a mixture of any of the foregoing with ethyl cellulose; and, (ii) solvent that is acetone, a mixture of acetone and water, a mixture of acetone and one or more lower alkanols having 1-8 carbon atoms, or a mixture of the foregoing. The composition may optionally comprise one or more plasticizers and/or flux enhancers.
