This invention is directed to a process for making surface treated absorbent gelling material by treating partially swollen absorbent gelling polymers, which have a specific water content with a treatment agent, such as a coating agent, and subsequently removing at least part of the water. The treatment agent thus typically forms a shell on the polymers or part thereof, which can extend when the polymers swell in water; thus, the treatment shell or coating does not rupture when the polymers swell in a liquid, e.g. water or saline water, the coating being extensible in wet state. The treatment agent comprises preferably an elastomeric polymeric material. The invention also relates to surface-treated absorbent gelling material obtainable by the process of the invention, and to products, e.g. disposable absorbent articles, comprising such material.

L'invention concerne un procédé d'élaboration d'une matière gélifiante absorbante traitée en surface qui repose, d'une part, sur le traitement partiel de polymères gélifiants absorbants partiellement gonflés possédant un contenu d'eau spécifique au moyen d'un agent de traitement, tel qu'un agent de revêtement et, d'autre part, sur l'élimination subséquente d'au moins une partie de l'eau. Ledit agent de traitement forme ainsi généralement une coque sur les polymères ou une partie associée qui peut se dilater lorsque les polymères gonflent dans l'eau. Ainsi, le revêtement ou la coque de traitement ne se rompt pas, lorsque les polymères gonflent dans un liquide, par exemple, l'eau ou l'eau saline, ledit revêtement étant dilatable à l'état mouillé. Ledit agent de traitement contient, de préférence, une matière polymère élastomère. Cette invention a aussi trait à une matière gélifiante absorbante traitée en surface pouvant être obtenue par le procédé de l'invention et à des produits, par exemple, des articles absorbants jetables contenant une telle matière.
