Process for the preparation of hexafluorobutane, and intermediates thereby obtainable Abstract of the Disclosure 1,1,1,4,4,4-Hexafluorobutane is prepared by first reacting 1,1,3,4,4-pentachlorobuta-1,3-diene with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of catalysts at 60 to 180°C to give 1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-chlorobutane, and converting this to 1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluorobutane. On working up the product of the first stage of the process, it is possible to isolate novel compounds of formula (I): CF2X-CH2-R (I) in which X is fluorine or chlorine and R is -CHCl-CF2Cl, -CHCl-CFCl2 or -CCl=CCl2.
