2101257 9213218 PCTABS00014 A seal (22') for a rotating shaft has a sealing face (24') provided with a plurality of grooves (33') in which a sealing fluid is held by counter-balanced centrifugal and pressure differential forces as the seal (22') rotates to form a seal between the sealing face (24') and a wall of the shaft housing. The grooves (33') can be of constant width and/or not radially disposed. The seal (22') may be used as a vacuum seal in a compressor for compressing steam in a milk concentrator apparatus.
