This invention is an apparatus, and method for guiding a surgical instrument within, and around the human body. During surgery on the body it is often necessary to approach a specific anatomical location precisely directly in order to minimize unwanted surgical trauma, and to place a soft tissue incision or a bone drill hole in an accurate location. The invention employs a light emitter (16), an array of light sensors (21-24), and a display (12) to accurately locate an anatomical feature into which the light emitter (16) has been placed. The light emitted from the emitter (16) is detected after passing through a thickness of bone, and/or soft tissue by the sensor array (21-24). The signal from the sensor array (21-24) is processed, and information indicating the relative direction of the emitter (16) from the sensor (21-24) is displayed. The surgeon then can proceed in the direction indicated.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de guider un instrument chirurgical dans le corps humain et autour de celui-ci. Au cours d'une intervention chirurgicale sur le corps, il est souvent nécessaire d'approcher précisément et directement une localisation anatomique spécifique, de façon à réduire un trauma chirurgical non désiré, et à effectuer une incision d'un tissu mou ou un trou de forage d'os dans un endroit précis. L'invention utilise un émetteur de lumière (16), un ensemble de capteurs de lumière (21, 24), et un écran (12) permettant de situer précisément la caractéristique anatomique dans laquelle l'émetteur de lumière (16) est placé. La lumière émise à partir de l'émetteur (16) est détectée par l'ensemble de capteurs (21, 24), après avoir traversé une épaisseur d'os et/ou de tissu mou. Le signal émis par l'ensemble de capteurs (21, 24) est traité, et des informations indiquant la direction relative de l'émetteur (16) par rapport au capteur (21, 26) sont affichées. Le chirurgien peut ensuite commencer l'intervention dans la direction indiquée.
