In this invention, a block storage device driver implements an abstract interface to a file located on a network that is used as the storage media for the file system of a mobile computing device. When the file system of the mobile computing device requires access to the data, a desktop agent moves data between the satellite store and the block storage device driver using TCP/IP across the network. The desktop agent moves data in contiguous memory blocks, which are called pages, and recently accessed pages are temporarily cached in the mobile unit. This invention requires no change to the mobile device resident file system for this method to be implemented.
