The invention relates to a high-temperature membrane (HTM) fuel cell electrolyte, a method of operating an HTM fuel cell and a fuel cell battery. The electrolyte contains phosphoric acid whose normal freezing point of 42 ~C is lowered by the addition of at least water as additive to such a degree that the fuel cell can be operated in the start/stop mode required, for example, for the use of such a fuel cell in mobile telephones.
