In a multicasting apparatus, a packet is received and stored into a buffer. The packet contains a first packet identifier and a destination identifier if it is a normal packet or a second packet identifier and a destination address if it is a multicast packet. The destination address is translated into a set of destination identifiers when the packet in the buffer contains the second packet identifier. The stored packet isforwarded from the buffer to one of a plurality of outgoing trunks which is specified by the destination identifier of the packet if the packet contains the first packet identifier. If the stored packet contains the second packet identifier, a copy of the packet in the buffer is repeatedly forwarded to one of the outgoing trunks which is specified by each one of the destination identifiers of the set.
