The latter compounds are useful as aldose reductase inhibitors. The intermediates include those of the formulae Image , Image , Image and Image (wherein R3 is lower alkyl, Q is Cl, Br, F or OSO2R4 [where R4 is alkyl, CF3 or optionally substituted phenyl] and Z is negative charge, H or hydroxy-protecting group).
