Suppression of copper chloride-induced in leaves (CIL1) protein or homolog thereof function in a plant results in decreased production of reactive oxygen species, increased salt tolerance, decreasing lateral root production, abolishing abscisic acid (ABA) sensitivity of seed, decreased bolting time, decreased flowering time, decreased silique development time or any combination thereof in the plant. Suppression of protein function is preferably accomplished by transforming the plant with the antisense of the CIL1 gene or homolog thereof or by creating a mutant of the plant in which the CIL1 gene or homolog thereof has been knocked out.
