A system for confirming a purchase by a customer from a merchant comprises a smart card including a data file, a first card reader device that accepts the smart card, a communications network connecting to the first card reader device, a merchant computer connected to the communications network, the merchant computer arranged to receive a purchase request from a customer associated with the smart card and to transmit a purchase authorization including confirmatory information relating to the purchase request to the data file of the smart card and a second card reader device that accepts the smart card. The second card reader device is arranged to read the confirmatory information from the data file of the smart card and to compare the confirmatory information with merchant confirmatory information, whereby the purchase from the merchant is released to the customer when the confirmatory information of the smart card matches the merchant confirmatory information.
